Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas at Vroman’s

taboo-fallin-up

Born in East L.A. in an area notorious for street gangs and poverty, Taboo was haunted by the environment that surrounded him, certain it shaped his destiny. Yet, steered by his dreams to be a performer and assisted by fate, the young Taboo was transformed when he discovered the world of hip-hop. From becoming a father at age eighteen to his almost career-ending collision with drugs and alcoholism, Taboo chased his dreams with his relentless tenacity and self-belief, refusing to surrender regardless of what life threw at him.

Taboo will sign one piece of memorabilia with purchase of his book from Vroman’s Bookstore. Pictures from the line are OK. Customers must show a Vroman’s receipt for Fallin’ Up to enter the signing line.

Camino Real to open at Boston Court this Saturday!

camino-title-imagesmall

The Theatre @ Boston Court and CalArts’ School of Theater present Camino Real by Tennessee Williams.

The Camino Real is a surreal walled-in city which becomes a kind of purgatory for the play’s myriad characters, famous figures from literature and history and those of Williams’ own invention. These lost souls, terrified of what lies beyond the wall–the Terra Incognita–struggle to escape their fate or make one last, meaningful connection. This contemporary, comic, and heartbreaking flight of theatricality is Tennessee Williams at his most surprising.

Camino Real has a very small bull’s eye.  It’s difficult to hit, but when you do, when you do – the world’s a brand new place.” – John Guare

Slake at Vroman’s!

Join Slake No. 2 contributors for a Valentine’s Day Eve reading at Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena. Apropos of the holiday and the closing of the Huntington Library’s exhibition Charles Bukowski: Poet on the Edge, Slake has organized a reading that touches on the strange-but-familiar bedfellows of “Love and Bukowski.”

The night will be sweetened by complimentary pastries from Europane Bakery + Cafe.

Here’s the lineup:

• Pasadena resident and Slake editor Laurie Ochoa, on Bukowski’s legacy
• Novelist Geoff Nicholson, on discovering Bukowski
Lawrence Wilson, the Pasadena Star-News’s public editor, on surfing San Simeon
• Novelist Victoria Patterson, on broken families
• Performer Lauren Weedman, on true love
• Journalist Sam Slovick, on young love
• Cult-movie queen Mary Woronov, on many loves

Slake: Los Angeles, the quarterly reader cofounded by former L.A. Weekly editors Joe Donnelly and Laurie Ochoa, is devoted to the endangered art of deeply reported narrative journalism and the kind of polished essay, memoir, fiction, poetry, and profile writing that is disappearing in a world of instant takes and unfiltered opinion. Slake marks a return to storytelling.
