mhd_logocolor

We invite you to join us in celebrating Pasadena’s first Mental Health Day on Saturday, May 14, 2011. May is Mental Health Awareness Month in the United States.  In honor of Pasadena’s long tradition of celebrating excellence and success in the fields of art, culture, music, science, education, and sports, Pasadena will host a special day celebrating the success of the community’s partners in the field of mental health social service outreach and treatment. This day will be dedicated to the mission of raising the community’s awareness of the importance of mental health study, maintenance, treatment, outreach, stigma reduction, and services research, development, and funding.

This event will technically be a week-long living “awareness” campaign, starting Sunday, May 8, 2011, and concluding in the Playhouse District (Vroman’s and the Laemmle’s Playhouse 7 Theater), on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at 10:00 AM, which will include a slate of speakers, authors signing books related to mental health, filmmakers showing (and discussing) their short mental-health-related films, and informational tables from a wide array of Pasadena area service providers.

The White Bird of Poston at PacAsia Museum this weekend!

pacasia

Pacific Asia Museum is pleased to announce that they will be hosting two performances of The White Bird of Poston this Saturday and Sunday.  These performances were originally scheduled to take place at the now-postponed Cherry Blossom Festival in Little Tokyo.

LA Opera’s award-winning Education and Community Programs Department presents the concert-version premiere of a new family opera by Eli Villanueva and Leslie Stevens, The White Bird of Poston. Set during WWII in a Japanese internment camp, the opera tells the story of a Japanese teenage girl who forms a bond with a Native American boy while living at the Poston Internment Camp, located on the Mojave Reservation in Arizona. Through their friendship, they help each other rediscover their cultural traditions and history. Together, they find the courage and confidence to move forward in an uncertain world. The concert performance features LA Opera artists:  Jerry Cordova, Daniel Faltus, LeRoy Villanueva, Karen Vuong, Miki Yamashita. Running time 50 minutes.

Performances will be at 2pm on Saturday and 4pm on Sunday.  The events are free to members, and included with museum admission for nonmembers.  Please feel free to spread the word; we hope to see you there!
