The experimental apples of Jessica Rath

Read this thoughtful interview from  Jessica Ritz of KCET and look at Jessica Rath’s take me to the apple breeder, opening this Friday at PMCA.

Excerpt:

Rath spoke with us about how she got bitten by the apple bug, and what this fruit has to teach us about current food debates, diversity, and our relationship to nature and art. It’s definitely a different type of conversation than the Fuji vs. Pink Lady discussions you might have at your farmers’ market apple vendor stand, where you will need to load up to make Sweet Rose Creamery’s ice cream chef Shiho Yoshikawa’s recipe for apple pie ala mode sundae, complete with salty pecan crumble and cinnamon sauce toppings. take me to the apple breeder is on view at PMCA through February 24, 2013.

One Hour/One Painting at PMCA

“One Hour/One Painting” is an exercise in seeing. The idea was developed from the observation that viewers, in museums and galleries, spend an average of six seconds in front of any given art work, and often spend more time with the identifying label than with the work itself.

In “One Hour/One Painting”, Peter Clothier invites small groups of participants to sit in front of a single art work for a full hour. He starts with a brief introduction to the principles of closed-eye breath meditation, encouraging participants to relax and refresh the eyes, and to rid the mind of expectations and pre-judgments. This leads to an alternation of closed- and open-eye work, the facilitator guiding the process with brief instructions and directions. This is individual work: there is no discussion or interaction, allowing each participant to experience the work as fully as possible, without interruption. At the end of the hour, however, Peter invites responses and discussion of the experience.

This is NOT a lecture. It is not about art history or criticism, but about giving the eye and the mind the opportunity to learn about pure visual experience and the benefits of contemplation. Participants can expect to come away with the very complete experience of a single work of art, and with the added benefits of an unusual hour of relaxation and serenity.

The one painting is Edgar Payne’s The Matterhorn from Zermatt.

Layer at PMCA

Have you noticed this colorful shape bursting out of the facade of the Pasadena Museum of California Art on Union? This sculpture is part of the show Layer: A Loose Horizon currently on view at the museum. From the website:

Continuing in the tradition of artists who have integrated the PMCA building into their exhibition, innovative art collaborative Layer that will occupy both the Project Room and the museum lobby, culminating in an impressive sculptural installation reaching across the museum’s outer façade. While software and digital fabrication have become indispensible elements of architectural design, enabling greater complexity of forms, the artists of Layer—Lisa Little and Emily White—challenge the ability of these tools to render environments that truly engage the visitor. By combining a computational approach with a perceptual one, the artists create a physically engrossing and intellectually stimulating spatial construction. The resulting project represents just one instance in a series of possible permutations. Sketches and early digital iterations of the piece will also be on view in the Project Room, revealing the artists’ process.
