Downtown Pasadena Walkabout

You can make Downtown Pasadena a more walker-friendly city by participating in the Downtown Pasadena Walkabout on Saturday, March 1, 2008 from 8:30 am to 2pm. Teams of walkers will fan out across Downtown Pasadena to evaluate and record their walking experience, ideas and recommendations. We will provide participating walkers with a continental breakfast, lunch, water and encouragement!

Fact Sheet

Who: The Playhouse District Association is sponsoring the Downtown Pasadena Walkabout.

• Mayor Bill Bogaard will convene the Walkabout.
• Deborah Murphy, Urban Design + Planning, is lead consultant for the Walkabout. Ms. Murphy is a recognized walking expert who has recently conducted Walkabouts in Hollywood and Glassell Park.

What: The Downtown Pasadena Walkabout is a an audit of walking conditions in Downtown Pasadena performed by walking and transportation experts, community residents, and representatives of local businesses, cultural and non-profit organizations.

Walkabout teams will assess 25 Downtown walking routes that link key destinations for residents, employees and visitors.

Where: The Walkabout will begin and end at Pasadena Presbyterian Church, South Hall, 585 East Colorado Boulevard at Madison Street, Pasadena.

When: Saturday, March 1, 2008. 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Why: Elevate Walking as the Preferred Way to Enjoy Downtown. The Walkabout’s goal is to promote walking in Downtown by improving the walking experience within and between the Playhouse, Old Pasadena, Civic Center/Midtown and South Lake Districts; and along key paths to destinations such as Metrolink stations, City Hall, the Convention Center, retail concentrations, and parking resources.

Support "Park Once." The Walkabout is also designed to support the "park once" approach which helps reduce traffic congestion. Participants will consider how best to encourage walking to multiple destinations in the Downtown after visitors, employees or residents have parked their car. Produce an Action Plan. The Walkabout will result in a plan of specific actions to improve Downtown Pasadena walking conditions in the short-, medium- and long-term.

Build a Downtown Walking Constituency: Downtown residents, businesses, government and cultural entities, employees, and visitors share a common stake in lively pedestrian activity, pedestrian safety, attractive streetscapes, and good circulation and parking in Downtown Pasadena.
